Paganism in a UCC Seminary, Part 2 of 2

Another community course, taught by the same person who led the ‘Goddess pilgrimage’:

What would happen [...] if we esteemed her even half as much as our forebearers did?

I will venture an answer: we would be breaking covenant with the One True God shown to us in Jesus Christ?

I’ll wash your mouth out with soap,
get rid of all the dirty false-god names,
not so much as a whisper of those names again.

(from Hosea, Ch. 2, The Message).

That it may be so, Lord!

Paganism in a UCC Seminary, Part 1 of 2

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land?  Maybe to the heartlands of the Reformation?  No, that would be far too orthodox.  From the United Theological Seminary, an apparently Christian seminary affiliated with the UCC: a ‘Pilgrimage to the Lands of the Goddess’, an event open to the community.  From the Spring 2008 issue of Lumen, the catalogue of community programs, your CUE donations hard at work (click for full-sized image):

Lancaster Theological Seminary

So I’m in Philadelphia for the moment, working at the Sister Peter Claver House of the Philadelphia Catholic Worker.  It’s been a good experience and I hope to blog a bit more about Catholic Worker in the future.

I visited Lancaster Theological Seminary last Monday and was mostly pleased by what I saw.  The place seems seeped in Protestant history and the Mercersburg movement for which I have a strong affinity.  I had an interesting conversation with the Systematic Theology Professor, Lee Barrett about the history of the institution, on Mercersburg, and other matters.  The academics of the institution seem okay and the course layout has been well thought through.

It seems that I will be enrolling there in January.  There are only two gripes that I have with the place, so far: one, the library seems a bit sub-par in terms of what books are available; and two, the rooms on campus are unfurnished, which means that I will have to find a room off-campus.

If I go there, I’m sure there will be more blogging about Lancaster in the future.
